INSTALLING ON LATE MODEL HARLEY DAVIDSON BARS - Harleys have placed a dent in the underside of their handlebars since the mid ‘80s to allow passage of a cable bundle from the switch clusters. They also have an unusually large inside diameter for a 1” outer diameter handlebar. This is done because of the design of the brake mount on all Harleys with black switchgear.

There are two ways to get around the problem

Handlebar Preparation Method #1:

  • Buy $90 aftermarket bars; convert them. No dent, smaller ID (inside diameter).
  • See Custom Chrome or dozens of others.

Handlebar Preparation Method #2:

  • A.  Remove the stock bars from the bike after stripping off all of the switchgear and brake/clutch, etc.
Do not disassemble these parts more than you need to, just remove them from the handlebar.
  • B.  Measure 3” outward from the end of the dent on the clutch side.  Mark it.
  • C.  Measure 3 1⁄4” outward from the end of the dent on the throttle side.  Mark it.
  • D. Cut the handlebars at the marks with a hack saw or a band saw.  Cut squarely.
Cut a bit long and file to square it up.

This will place the switch clusters out about 1 1⁄2 ” farther out from where they were, resulting in improved leverage.  Move the brake/cutch clamps farther out 1” when re-assembling, and you can route the switch cables below the brake/clutch clamps instead of through them. The clamp’s inside locating stud will fall within the dent; you my have to file it a bit. A pair of spacers to re-integrate the look will be available by the end of May.

Proceed with the standard installation instructions. You may have to use extra blue tape for shimming to the larger Harley bar ID

FlatBars will not install properly on Harley FXRS with air bars.
